What is a lie?

One person intends to mislead another, doing so deliberately, without prior notification of this purpose, and without having been explicitly asked to do so by the target.  There are two primary ways to lie: to conceal and to falsify.  In concealing, the liar withholds some information without actually saying anything untrue.  In falsifying, an additional step is taken.  Not only does the liar withhold true information, but he presents false information as if it were true.

Credibility is one of the most important factors in any business interaction. Anyone would want to know if an employee they are about to hire, the suppliers they are about to select or the business partners they are about to conduct business with can be trusted.  But, given statistics show we are so bad at detecting lies, how can we achieve this?

Lying is a daily event and we all lie for different reasons.  Not all lies are bad but there are lies and deceptions that have proven to be extremely costly and damaging.  How can we detect these lies or signs of deception?

Research has shown that accuracy in evaluating believability and trustworthiness can significantly improve with training that combines knowledge and skills focused primarily on facial expressions, verbal and other non-verbal clues.  Our “Credibility Assessment” workshop provides participants with a research-based, practical, and proven approach to distinguishing truths from lies in a variety of contexts.

Workshop Content

In this workshop, participants are exposed to the psychology of truth telling, lying and an evidenced-based model that provides the framework for credibility assessment.  The core concepts of “body language leakage”, “hot spots” and “non-biased judgments” and their role in evaluating truthfulness are introduced and repeatedly demonstrated with research and case studies.

Participants learn about the 5 Communication Channels including nonverbal and verbal channels in which clues to truthfulness and lying may be revealed.  Learning is maximized through the use of lectures, video, audio, transcript demonstration, small group exercises and group discussions.
